WESTPORT, MASS. (WHDH) - A well-known family farm was destroyed by a large fire late Friday night in Westport.

The fire began at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Friday at a farm on Gifford Road. The fire sparked at a small barn but quickly spread to larger surrounding barns. Fire departments from several communities responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown but firefighters believe it was accidental. A large amount of fertilizer in the barns proved to be an accelerant for the flames

No people were injured in the fire. Firefighters initially reported that several cows were killed but Mike Ferry Jr., whose parents own the farm, said their animals were largely unharmed.

Ferry said several neighbors have already stopped by to offer their help to the family as they rebuild.
