SANDWICH, Mass. (WHDH) —  Many neighborhoods in Sandwich are still in the dark after blizzard conditions Saturday.

“We’re without phones, we’re using cell phones. We were on a generator, we lost our generator. We lost the ability to answer 911.” says Chief George Russell of the Sandwich Fire Department.

John Vieira and his family lost their Sandwich home in the middle of the night on Saturday after his son accidentally started a fire in the family’s living room.

“We moved the sofas toward to the fireplace to see if we can gain some heat.  As my son was leaving the couch he flipped one of the blankets, it ignited and the house went up in flames.” says Vieira.

John, his wife, their son and their two dogs frantically ran out in to the blizzard at 2 a.m., barely escaping with their lives.

“It felt like the end of the world. You could not see two feet in front of you.” says Vieira.

Despite losing everything the Vieira’s are grateful their family is alive.
