HOLLISTON, MASS. (WHDH) - One person has died and more than a dozen dogs perished after flames tore through a Holliston home late Monday night.
Crews responding to a reported house fire on Winter Street around 11:40 p.m. learned that a woman had become trapped on the second floor as flames poured through the roof of the home, according to Holliston Deputy Fire Chief Mark Dellicker.
Firefighters ran upstairs toward a bedroom where she was reportedly going to get her dogs.
“She didn’t have kids. Those were her kids,” neighbor Kevin Swanecamp said. “She tells her husband she is going back and of course he took a fit over that and unfortunately that’s the way it all rolled out.”
Crews found the woman within minutes and got her out of the home.
Two people were transported to the hospital, where one person was later pronounced dead, the Department of Fire Services announced.
Their name has not been released.
No firefighters were reported injured.
Crews counted roughly 20 dogs inside the house, many of which were in cages.
They tried to resuscitate three or four of the pets but the rest were already dead, Dellicker said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
