Firefighters were able to extinguish a four-alarm house fire on Friday, according to Wakefield Fire Chief Michael Sullivan.
According to Sullivan, fire crews responded to Eastern Avenue at approximately 11:35 a.m. to find flames already engulfing the building. The residents were home when the fire began but were able to escape unharmed.
Second, third and fourth alarms were struck to bring in more resources and the fire was finally extinguished after a two-hour pitched battle. Crews from the Reading, Stoneham, Melrose, North Reading, Lynnfield, Woburn, Winchester and Wilmington Fire Departments provided assistance on the scene.
One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for heat-related injuries, according to Sullivan.
The cause of the fire is under active investigation.
