MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) — Authorities say a fisherman has died after being swept off the rocks into the waters off Rhode Island.
Rescue crews responded to Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge in Middletown at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday after a witness called 911 to report a man was swept off the rocks while fishing.
Middletown fire personnel on a rescue Jet Ski reached the victim about 50 yards off shore.
Rescuers performed CPR on the beach before the man was taken to Newport Hospital and pronounced dead.
His name was not released. The death remains under investigation.
WPRI-TV reports that shortly after the rescue, state Fish and Wildlife Service workers posted signs warning people about to stay away from the shoreline because of high storm surges and waves.
