FITCHBURG, MASS. (WHDH) - A Fitchburg man died Tuesday after investigators say he intentionally set his Valley Street apartment on fire.

The man was rescued by first arriving firefighters, taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a Boston burn center, where he died.

Investigators say the man was the sole occupant of the one-story, one-bedroom apartment at 36 Valley Street. They say the fire was deliberately set by the victim.

The victim’s identity will be released when the medical examiner’s office has completed a formal identification and next of kin notifications are made, according to Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early.

Fitchburg fire investigators, Fitchburg police detectives and state police jointly investigated the fire.

No additional details were immediately available.
