Stupendous day – even for a Monday. This thaw is really taking root. We’re dodging potholes, banishing snowpack, rediscovering the outdoors (including frost-free walks downtown)…and wondering when the shoe will drop.
Well, it doesn’t look like it’ll be this week. Highs will remain above normal through the start of the weekend! Typically we see the coldest temperatures of winter over the next 7-10 days!
Thaws of this nature are not unheard of, but this one’s duration is out of the ordinary for a January thaw. Typically coming in the 3rd week of the month, January thaws average about 10 deg. above normal. Since it started on Saturday, this one is averaging 17.5 degrees. Yes, it’s young and most likely won’t stay at this average, but I just wanted to toss that out there.
Bitter air isn’t out of the picture, however. There’s a sharply colder shot of air coming by early next week, that promises to bring back talk of that (dant, dant, dah) Polar Vortex.
And I’m sure we’ll be out ahead of all the hype.
