The Massachusetts State Trooper killed on the job is being remembered by his community.

Friends and fellow troopers call Trooper Thomas Clardy a man of "outstanding character," dedicated to his family and work.

Clardy and his family live in Hudson. He was well-liked and loved in his neighborhood.

Many people in the area knew him, and they are sending their thoughts and prayers to the family.

Joey Durant, who is friends with Clardy’s oldest son, spoke fondly of Clardy. 

"He was a great guy. We used to play basketball together with him and his son," said Durant.

Others described Clardy as a nice man. 

"He was a really nice guy. I never met anybody nicer than him, actually. He was good to my daughter. She loved being up at their house. She came home crying, so she is really upset about it," said John Chaves, whose daughter is friends with one of Clardy’s daughters. 

Around nine months ago, the Clardy family moved a few blocks away from their longtime neighborhood home.

Friends of the family say they are grieving and their hearts and prayers go out to the family.

Gov. Charlie Baker released this statement following the tragedy:

"Lauren and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Trooper Thomas Clardy who tragically lost his life in the line of duty. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, fellow troopers and the entire law enforcement community during this very difficult time." 

A 30-year-old Webster man is facing charges in connection with the crash. 

The man’s family, in a statement, said:

The family would like to send a message of condolence and deepest sympathies to the family of the fallen Massachusetts State Trooper. The family is devastated by the death of the dedicated trooper and proud father who lost his life in the effort of making all of us safe. His family is in our prayers.

The wake for Clardy will be held on March 21 from 2 – 7 p.m. at St. Michaels church in Hudson. His funeral will be on March 22 at 11 a.m. the church.
