If the morning coffee won’t wake you up, a walk out the front door will as temperatures this morning run a few degrees either side of 0 and wind chills are a biting -15 to -25. While we get a fair amount of sunshine today, we won’t rebound all that much as highs hover in the teens and wind chills “warm” to -5. The wind is gusty today, at times pushing 30-35mph. The record for coldest high temperature today in Boston is 18, we’ll likely come in at 16 or 17 on this 26th day in a row below average.
Frigid air holds tonight as many suburbs fall below 0 and Boston stays barely above it. We start Saturday with sunshine, but clouds fill in for the afternoon and light snow breaks out by 4-5PM.
Weekend Storm:
-Snow starts 4-5PM for most towns. Transitions to freezing rain/rain from 9pm to 1am from south to north. 1-3″ in Boston, 3-5″ along & northwest of 495.
-Freezing rain is brief for many towns Sunday AM as we turn to rain with temps in the mid to upper 30s. Heaviest rain Sunday AM across Southeast Mass.
-Precipitation totals run 0.50-1.00″ (liquid equivalent of snow/ice/rain) with highest totals over Southeast Mass. Most of that falls as snow outside 495.
-Add that weight into the current snowpack, and more stress on rooftops is a concern. Keep cleaning those flat roofs!
-Rain totals won’t be enough for river/stream flooding, however, clogged drains may lead to street flooding in Eastern and Southeastern Mass.
Bitter cold follows in early next week, and yes, we have to watch the potential for a close call with an ocean storm Tuesday night/Wednesday.
Stay warm!
