Snow is moving through this evening, making Massachusetts looks like a winter wonderland. Is this the snow we’ve all been waiting for?? In a simple answer: “Nope.” It’s not going to stick around for very long.
As I write (6:30pm), Worcester, MA has picked up 1″ of accumulation, with 1-2″ still to go. The forecast of 2-4″ for higher elevations is still on track. Coastal areas won’t get more than an inch (including Boston). And by morning… all of that snow will magically disappear.
The threat for icy surfaces will be sticking around with us though, even once the snow changes over. There is some much warmer air upstairs that’s already starting to work in… the trouble is cold, dense air near the surface will be slow to warm. This sets us up for a freezing rain event – which can be even more dangerous than snow. That’s why a Winter Weather Advisory is still in effect for most of the state. Bridges and overpasses will have ice on them the longest. Sidewalks and parking lots are also a concern that many people overlook, so take it easy driving and walking!!
The milder air will scour out the cold by the early hours of Sunday morning. This will change everything over to just plain wet. Scattered showers are still with us through Sunday, plus it will be windy in SE Mass. A Wind Advisory is in effect for the Cape and islands through 7pm Sunday.
I mentioned that warmer air moving in… which isn’t just incredible because it’s changing our snow to ice to rain in just a few hours, but it’s also incredible because our highs tomorrow will warm up significantly. The interior will top out in the upper 40s to near 50, and in SE Mass we’re close to record highs, topping out near 60 degrees!
Just like the snow though, the mild temps will magically disappear. We’re in for BITTER cold next week. Light snow overnight Tuesday to Wednesday morning, then highs in the teens on Thursday. Yikes!
Stay safe out there! – Bri
