NEWTON, MASS. (WHDH) - What is it like for an Olympian when both mom and dad are coaches in your sport?
Olympic rower Gevvie Stone’s mom said it has its ups and downs, but the joys of having a daughter who is an Olympian is beyond words.
“When you’re coaching someone at the beginning of their career, you have no idea the outcome and she was my daughter and I knew she was strong but I had no idea,” Lisa Stone said.
Team USA rower Stone was raised by two world-class rowers. Her mother Lisa was pregnant with Gevvie while coaching Radcliff’s team.
“I would never have thought in a million years my daughter would row a single in two Olympics,” Lisa Stone said. “It’s like really? Are you kidding me?”
Gevvie grew up in Newton and was surrounded by rowing.
Her father, Greg, is now her personal Olympic coach.
Sometimes, the professional relationship runs into family life.
“This past fall Gevvie would say something to me, and then Greg would say something to me, and then it would keep on going and I’m like, ‘Will you guys talk to each other? This is ridiculous, I’m not going to be a go between,’ Lisa Stone said.
But now, coach and rower, father and daughter, are in sync.
“My first race when he was coaching me he shoved me off the dock and said, ‘No matter what happens, I still love you,'” Gevvie Stone said. “That was the worst motivational speech someone could ever give. That is horrible. So, we’ve progressed since then.”
