The city of Gloucester is taking steps to lower the number of discarded hypodermic needles being left in public places.
City officials will start a pilot program for the exchange of needles.
The program would allow drug users to obtain clean needles at little or no cost.
Clean-up crews will also be used to find any discarded needles in the streets, parks and beaches.
The city also wants to remind people that if you see a discarded needle in public, do not pick it up. Instead, call the police department to have the needle removed.
