Gold stands in first place after ladies short program

BOSTON (WHDH) — Ladies figure skating is always the marquee event, and they did not disappoint on the first day of the U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Gracie Gold lived up to her name; she skated nearly flawlessly and now she stands in first place following the short program.

"It felt amazing – one of my best shorts, it's a new short and I'm glad that's the first time I skated I was able to perform it and at a venue like the us championships to skate that well is amazing,” said Gracie gold, Olympic hopeful.

As for local girl Christina Gao, she is in sixth place, and said she is proud of her performance but admitted she was jittery in front of the home crowd.

“I was a little trippy. I think I landed all my jumps and got a little too excited, but I just have to keep my focus even if I land all my jumps and make sure everything is solid,” said Christina Gao, Olympic hopeful.

7News Olympic analyst, Tara Lipinski, commented on the skaters’ short program performances.

“Gracie was just fantastic tonight. In the past she’s really struggled with confidence issues but no sign of it tonight. So strong, and she’s a technically brilliant skater,” Lipinski said.

The Men’s and Ice Dancing Teams are set to perform on Friday.
