BOSTON (AP) — Horse racing and simulcasting is legal again in Massachusetts after state lawmakers moved to correct a legislative snafu that caused a suspension of racing.
The Legislature ended its formal session for the year early Wednesday without taking final procedural votes on a bill to reauthorize racing and simulcasting for the next 12 months, leaving both activities illegal in the state and jeopardizing hundreds of jobs.
The House and Senate enacted the bill on Thursday during informal sessions, when legislation can pass if there is no opposition.
Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed the measure.
The executive director of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, which oversees racing, said he’d been in touch with legislators about resolving the problem.
The Plainridge casino tentatively rescheduled Thursday’s racing card for Friday, anticipating a Statehouse fix.
