RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Minor changes to a North Carolina law limiting protections for LGBT people have been signed by the governor.
Legislators left the law mostly intact during their yearly session. They did make a change requested by Republican Gov. Pat McCrory that restores workers’ ability to use state law to sue over workplace discrimination, but leaves sexual orientation and gender identity unprotected.
After signing the changes into law Monday, McCrory also discussed a key provision that remains in place and requires transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates in many public buildings.
McCrory issued a statement saying it’s a national issue that will be decided in the courts.
The U.S. Justice Department has said the measure violates federal law. Several federal lawsuits are pending.
