Great Britain’s Adam Peaty lowered his own 100m breaststroke world record from 57.92 to 57.55 seconds, marking the first world record of the swimming competition.
Peaty set the original mark in London in April 2015, before he went on to win the 2015 world title with a time of 58.52.
Peaty enters Saturday night’s semifinal ranked in first place.
