BOSTON (AP) — The Green-Rainbow Party says it earned enough votes in the recent election to qualify as an official political party in Massachusetts in 2020.
Under state law, if one or more candidates affiliated with a party receives at least 3 percent of the vote in a statewide race, that party is recognized and earns ballot status for the next state election.
Unofficial returns from Nov. 6 show Green-Rainbow candidates Juan Sanchez and Jamie Guerin received 3.8 percent and 3.5 percent of the vote in their respective races for secretary of state and treasurer.
The results must still be certified by state election officials.
Ballot status means the party could hold primaries in 2020 and its nominees for president or any state office would be automatically listed on the November ballot.
