Guests were evacuated early Sunday morning after a fire broke out at a motel in Sturbridge.
The fire started on the outside of one of the buildings at the Publick House Motor Lodges just before 4 a.m. Sunday. Guests at the 240-year-old historic inn said they woke up to the smell of smoke.
Firefighters said when they arrived on the scene, they found several cars had also caught fire. Three people were trapped inside the building but were able to be rescued safely.
No one was injured in the fire but one of the lodges behind the inn was destroyed. The cause is under investigation but the Sturbridge fire chief believes a stray cigarette butt from someone at one of the several weddings happening on the property may be to blame.
