GRAND GOAVE, Haiti (WHDH) The “Be Like Brit” orphanage in Haiti, founded in honor of Rutland, Mass. native Britney Gengel who died in the country’s earthquake in 2010, is preparing for Hurricane Matthew.

A man who works at the orphanage said they have identified the best areas to shelter in place, boarded up all windows and are staying in a sturdy building.

On their Facebook page, the orphanage posted this photo of a Haitian flag waving outside the orphanage, with the caption “Keeping the faith.”

The orphanage told Channel 7 that the storm is not “terrible” now, but conditions are getting worse.

The “Be Like Brit” orphanage was founded after Gengel’s death.

She sent a text to her mother hours before she died in the earthquake saying she loved the people of Haiti and wanted to start an orphanage there.

The country continues to heal from an earthquake six years ago.
