There's no such thing as stop the presses. Some of this stuff is on its way to your mailbox — as catalogs. Some people think of all these as a great way to shop without leaving home. "Some of them are interesting." "I enjoy them." But for others these are just a mess in their mailbox. "It's just a waste of paper." "There goes another tree, right?" 19-billion catalogs, no kidding, 19 billion are printed and mailed each year. And while merchants love them to lure in new customers, now with the holiday season over some recipients have one enduring question:  "Do I have to get all these catalogs all the time?" Well, no! Watch what happened to Ted, could happen to you!  Ted Whitcomb, Catalog shopper"They just kept coming and coming and coming." Ted doesn't mind catalog shopping. There was just that one store that was inundating his mailbox. Ted Whitcomb, Catalog shopper"I'd be like, what the heck, what's up with this." He called the store, he went to the website, he called customer service Ted Whitcomb, Catalog shopper"Please take me off, I really want to get off this list." Listen Ted, if you don't want any catalogs at all, it's almost a one click deal. Go here, the Direct Marketing website, and just say no. Remember, people who send catalogs don't want you to be annoyed with them, plus, it's expensive to design and print and mail something a customer doesn't want. Sue Geramian, Direct Marketing Association"Every time that a merchant has any kind of touch point with the consumer, they want it to be a pleasurable experience. So they don't want to be bombarding anybody with catalogs that they don't want." But what if there are some catalogs you want to keep? We found an online catalog controller that lets you pick and choose.  Chuck Teller, Catalog Choice"We figured if we could connect the customer with the company and let them know which ones they want and don't want, then we could reduce the waste." The Catalog Choice website lists almost 400 catalogs. You check the ones you don't want, and poof, in a few weeks, bye bye junk mail. Ted took his name off both catalog lists, and now, his mailbox has plenty of room!  Catalog Choice: www.catalogchoice.orgDirect Marketing Association: www.dmachoice.org(Copyright (c) 2009 Sunbeam Television Corp.
