(WHDH) — People across the country are getting set to prepare their Thanksgiving feasts.

Health experts and researchers at Cornell University say there are a few things you can do to keep your food clean.

  • Wash your hands and your utensils
  • Separate raw meats from other foods
  • Make sure your food cooks properly
  • Try thawing your turkey in a cooler rather than on the counter

When cooking turkey, it requires a temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Experts also say you should monitor your food regularly and do not leave perishable items out for hours.

The USDA says you should not wash your turkey before cooking it.

Officials say washing can spread bacteria and cross-contaminate other food.

If you do insist on washing it, experts say you should use cold water to rinse the cavity and drain that water into the sink.
