The average duration was 7.4 years and reached over 10 years for African-American women.

Younger women and those with depression and anxiety were also more likely to have a longer period of symptoms.

The study asked a group of overweight adults to eat at least 30 grams of fiber a day, or instead follow the American Heart Association diet.

In the end, the fiber group lost as much weight and showed several other health improvements.
