CHICAGO (WHDH) - A boy from Illinois can now run and play again thanks to a foundation started by a Boston Marathon bombing survivor.

Jude Hill, 5, lost both of his legs two years ago in a lawnmower accident at his family’s home in Peoria. Poor-fitting prosthetics meant he was unable to be as active as he once was.

Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott reached out to the family to help. Abbott lost a leg in the bombing and thanks to the public’s generosity, she now has six different legs for different activites.

“I was very lucky that my tragedy was so public, in a sense, because people reached out to help,” said Abbott.

Abbott started the Heather Abbott Foundation in order to help others with similar injuries. The foundation provides people with prosthetic limbs and paid for Jude to get new prosthetic running blades.

“Children should be able to run, so it’s incredible to be able to see him do that,” said Abbott.

To date, the foundation has provided six people with prosthetic limbs.
