He had a title on the door…but not on the floor–of Congress.
So–to put it bluntly: John Boehner is quitting as House Speaker because he didn’t speak for the Republicans in the House–he couldn’t control them.
Like this building, Congress is imploding…Collapsing on itself as a result of political pressure it can’t withstand…The pressure between voters and political leaders.
When Republican primary voters were asked "do you think the Republican majorities in the House and Senate have done all they could to block or reverse President Barack Obama’s agenda, 66% said no…Just 30% yes.
And why?
38% say Republicans would rather fight each other.
28% say they didn’t really want to block Obama’s agenda, and
13% say they’re not smart enough to block Obama’s agenda.
And this disgust has spread to the Presidential race, where it’s no coincidence that the top Republicans…Donald Trump, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina–have never served in public office..
Boehner has been trapped in the middle…Unable to unite the Republican conservatives and moderates, and unable to peel away many Democrats from supporting the president.
So while has held one of the most powerful positions in Washington since 2011, for quite a while he’s been powerless.
That’s why he couldn’t stop a government shutdown over Obamacare in 2013, and was staring at the possibility of another one–over Planned Parenthood–this year.
Don’t cry for John Boehner…He has all the tears he needs.
But–if you want to cry for something–then cry for your government, because it’s broken and won’t be easily fixed.
