For the presidential candidates, Brussels is proof elections aren’t always about the economy, because you can’t have an economy if you’re not safe.
And Brussels also proves we’re in a war we’re not ending or winning.
Our only choices are fighting and talking, and we’re doing both– without much success.
So, when Hillary Clinton says we need to "intensify and broaden our strategy," isn’t it reasonable to ask– isn’t that what you should have been doing while you were Secretary of State?
And what specifically did you do that helped us beat ISIS when you had that office?
Bernie Sanders–reacting to Brussels, says: "This type of barbarism cannot be allowed to continue," but since Sanders would only use military as "a last resort," that means more talk for now.
Brussels will also remind voters Sanders has little foreign policy experience.
If any candidate benefits politically from Brussels, it’s Donald Trump.
"This is just the beginning. It will get worse and worse," says Trump, and who can say he’s wrong?
Brussels also lets Trump repeat the core promise of his campaign: "…At this point we cannot allow these people to come into our country," said Trump.
But Trump has been calling for reducing American support for NATO, and Brussels is NATO’s Headquarters…
Which gave Ted Cruz a chance to attack Trump for retreating from NATO, and to attack President Obama for not taking ISIS seriously.
John Kasich piled on the president, too, calling on President Obama to leave Cuba and fly back to Washington, DC, or Brussels.
But will any of that make any difference in Arizona, Utah, or Idaho today–where there’s a primary and two caucuses?
No!
Because Brussels isn’t new–it’s just the latest battle in the war on terror, and most of us already know where we stand.
