President Obama had a choice tonight: look for common ground with Republicans, or dig in for another long year of partisan politics.
“I believe this can be a breakthrough year for America,” said President Obama.
At first I thought the president was ready to reach out to the Republicans:
“In the coming months, let’s see where else we can make progress together,” he said.
But if that was a call for compromise, it was followed by a threat:
“But America does not stand still – and neither will I. So wherever and whenever I can take steps without legislation to expand opportunity for more American families, that’s what I’m going to do,” said the president.
So, after listening to the State of the Union, here’s a prediction: the state of American government will remain paralyzed in 2014, and President Obama shouldn’t be surprised.
