It’s done: Republicans, your presidential nominee is Donald Trump! There will not be a contested convention.

What was unthinkable not so long ago, is now a virtual fact. The man who began his campaign as a joke may end it as the next president of the United States. Ted Cruz’s collapse leaves only a Democrat between Donald Trump and the White House.

And the Democrats still haven’t decided who that will be. Hillary Clinton speaks as if she’s sewn the nomination up but she hasn’t. She’s still bogged down in a race with Bernie Sanders that wasn’t supposed to be a race. Once she was as certain to win as Trump was to lose.

Now look. Can Clinton beat Sanders for the Democratic nomination? Yes! Can she beat Trump in November? Maybe and maybe not.

We’re headed for an election unlike any other, where people who haven’t voted before are voting. And where so many people who thought they knew what would happen, now know they knew nothing.
