SWAMPSCOTT, MASS. (WHDH) - A home on Elmwood Road in Swampscott went up in flames Sunday night, creating challenges for the firefighters trying to put it out.

Crews said it appears the flames started on the outside of the home. The fire spread to the detached garage and then to the interior of the house.

Fire officials said the blaze was difficult to extinguish for several reasons.

“It was intimidating because it was an exterior fire and a lot of the paneling on the side of a house is very flammable, so it was very intimidating on arrival,” Lt. Jason Losano of the Swampscott Fire Department said. “The house itself is cut up in different ways, not a typical layout for a house, so it was challenging to find the void spaces inside the second and third floor. “

Firefighters said everyone was out of the house by the time they got there.
