HOPKINTON, Mass. (WHDH) — A 13-year-old boy was hit and killed as he left school Wednesday.
According to police, the boy was attempting to cross Route 85 in Hopkinton on his bike when he was struck by a 16-year-old female driver.
Investigators say the boy died from injuries at the scene. The driver of the car was hospitalized as a precaution.
At the boy's middle school, his classmates joined students around the flag pole for a moment of silence.
“Really overwhelming in terms of just the compassion and the concern and kids standing in silence. That many students just standing there,” said Dr. Cathy McLeod, Supt., Hopkinton schools.
“My thoughts are with both families really. It's very sad, really hits home. With having three kids it really hits home,” said Rima Mallouh, parent.
“I feel bad for the parent and for the child, too, you know. It's a lot of traffic. We have traffic. I told my husband it's very scary out there,” said Randi Puri, parent.
Investigators say the 13-year-old was riding his bike across the road when he was hit. The accident occurred right in front of his house.
“I just think that speed is the problem. If she was going at a reasonable rate or maybe he didn't look when he crossed there are two factors there,” said Elizabeth Swenson.
The cause of the crash was still under investigation.
“I’m so sorry for both families and to find out also that it's my neighbor across the street. I'm heartbroken for them,” one neighbor said.
No information has been released on the 16-year-old driver. The Hopkinton school superintendent says she Isis not a resident of Hopkinton.
