In light of an increased number of credit card "skimming" instances, the Nashua Police Department has released some tips to help people avoid having their credit card information stolen.
While using a self-service gas station pump, the devices have been placed inside the actual machine and would not be visible from the outside.
Police advise users to look for "tamper proof" tape or some other type of security instrument placed on the door or over the lock. This type of security device is used to ensure the door to the pump has not been opened inappropriately.
If the tape is torn, missing or marked "void" please go into the gas station, alert the attendant and use the card reader inside the store, police said.

ATM users are advised to pay attention to the card reader used to open the ATM kiosk and the ATM itself.
If there appears to be something covering any of the readers, do not use the machine and notify the bank or local police.
Police said if a suspect cannot access the inside of the machine, they will place the counterfeit card reader over the actual card reader of the ATM, which will be used to steal credit card information.
Police said in either case a suspect will use the counterfeit card readers to steal and record card information and PIN, to be retrieved later.
