NAUSET, Mass. (WHDH) — Hundreds of fish were spotted lining the shore on the beach in Nauset though officials said it is not a rare sight.
The Orleans harbor master said the fish are menhaden, a type of herring. The fish are pushed to shore by striped bass and bluefish and this has been happening for months. The New England Aquarium said menhaden can also throw themselves out of the water to escape predators and wait for the tide to bring them back into the water.
The menhaden, also known as pogies, are used by people as bait to catch other fish.
