BOSTON (WHDH) - Boston is just days away from its New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to be a part of the free First Night event, which will feature music, performance, a parade, and fireworks.
There will also be plenty of free events in Copley Square, the Boston Public Library, and nearby churches.
City leaders are now taking steps to make sure its a safe celebration for everyone.
Boston Fire, Police, EMS, and Transit Police will have extra patrols around the area throughout the evening. This will apply to both downtown areas and neighborhoods.
“We came up with as usual another comprehensive plan to ensure a family friendly event,” said Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox.
In order to manage the big crowds and parking bans, attendees are encouraged to take public transit. The MBTA will extend service starting at 3 p.m. through 2 a.m. and will make all service free after 8 p.m.
