SCITUATE, R.I. (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered in Scituate to remember a popular local teenager killed in a weekend dirt bike crash.

The group gathered for a candlelight vigil on Monday night at the spot where police say 14-year-old Jared Carpenter was killed while riding his dirt bike on Saturday.

Jared was remembered for his love of football, lacrosse, basketball and riding dirt bikes. He would have been a high school freshman this fall.

His father said he raised his son to be a lion, because while lions are not the biggest, fastest, tallest or the smartest animals, they are the ones nobody messes with.

Police say Jared apparently lost control of his bike and crashed. He was taken to the hospital where he died.
