SCARBOROUGH, Maine (AP) — The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency intends to open a holding facility in Maine that would detain people suspected of immigration violations.
The Bangor Daily News reported it learned of ICE’s plan in an email it obtained. ICE wants to share an industrial building in Scarborough with a marketing firm and federal veterans health agency, the paper reported.
An email obtained by the Daily News included a statement by a leasing specialist with the U.S. General Services Administration that the space would be “lowkey and not brightly advertised as an ICE location.”
The timing of the Scarborough project wasn’t clear on Friday. ICE was the subject of protests in nearby Portland months ago when it decided it would open an administrative office in the city.
ICE does not have other holding facilities in Maine. A spokeswoman for ICE declined to comment on the facility to the Daily News.
