BOSTON (WHDH) - An NBA skills trainer from Rhode Island was arraigned Monday on rape and drugging charges stemming from a Boston criminal investigation.

Suffolk County authorities said this is the first time they are pressing charges for Drugging for Intercourse.

“These cases are about power,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said. “They’re not just about sex, and for me, and for our offices, it doesn’t matter who you are.”

The victim said she blacked out and remembers waking up naked, bloody, and bruised.

“She remembers very little after entering the hotel room despite only having had one to two drinks, which would not be normal to black out,” Suffolk County Prosecutor Erin Murphy said.

McClanaghan’s defense attorney said text messages between the two parties are proof of consent, and said they have not yet seen a toxicology report on whether there were drugs in the victim’s system.

Prosecutors said video surveillance shows Robert McClanaghan putting his hand in his pants pocket and sprinkling something into the woman’s drink when she was distracted. Additionally, in a search of McClanaghan’s home, prosecutors said they found the victim’s underwear.

McClanaghan is being held on $30,000 bail. The judge also ruled he must wear a GPS ankle bracelet, surrender his passport, have no contact with the alleged victim and stay in his home state of Rhode Island except for meetings with his Massachusetts attorneys.
