BUNKER HILL, Ind. (WHDH) — A central Indiana town is now looking for outside help after their entire police force resigned.
The five police officers of the Bunker Hill Police Department resigned Wednesday, telling the town council that they have had enough.
“They would not communicate with us or the offers, they kept scaling back,” said former Bunker Hill Town Marshal Michael Thomison.
The officers accused the town council of asking them to “illegal, unethical and immoral things.” Examples cited include asking the police to run background checks on other town councilors. The officers claim they were threatened if they refused to.
The police officers were also concerned about their safety. The five officers were forced to share one set of body armor.
Thomison’s reasons for leaving were also personal. He was diagnosed with cancer last year and when he was ready to go back to work in May, he was told he was costing the town too much money because of his insurance and would only be able to work part-time.
The town said body armor was provided to all the police officers and councilors denied asking them to do anything illegal or inappropriate.
