LUDLOW, Mass. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate has died after trying to hang himself in his cell at the Hampden County jail.

A spokesman for the sheriff’s department says the 32-year-old Springfield man tried to hang himself with an article of clothing. He was found during routine rounds at the Ludlow jail at about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

After lifesaving efforts on the scene, the man was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead hours later. His name was not made public.

The man had been at the jail since November to await trial on breaking and entering charges.

All inmates undergo a psychiatric evaluation, and a jail spokesman says the inmate showed no signs of emotionally distressed behavior.

The death remains under investigation.
