PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Maine State Police say the driver of a tractor-trailer believed to have struck and killed a 23-year-old bicyclist near the start of the three-day, 180-mile Trek Across Maine fundraiser was unaware his truck might have hit the rider.

David LeClair of Watertown, Mass., was killed Friday on Route 2 in Hanover near the start of the American Lung Association fundraiser ride.

Police spokesman Steve McCausland says no charges have been filed against 24-year-old Michel Masse-Defresne of Quebec, who was stopped miles away in Rumford after the accident. He says there aren't any issues with Masse-Defresne's driving log or compliance with trucking laws.

The Portland Press Herald says there's no physical evidence linking the truck to the accident, but that police believe it was the truck based on witness descriptions.
