An investigation continues into two Department of Public Works employees in North Reading who are accused of selling drugs.

Two men are behind bars after police said they found opioids, marijuana, and cash in one of their homes.

Police said the men sold the drugs to a number of employees in the Department of Public Works.

Six other employees have been placed on administrative leave.

North Reading’s Public Works director has resigned.

Town Administrator Michael Gilleberto released a statement on the investigation on Wednesday, saying in part:

The Town of North Reading is also conducting an external administrative investigation to assist us in determining the extent of this problem and to aid the Town in taking swift and decisive actions going forward….The citizens of North Reading rightly expect to have a functional and trustworthy Department of Public Works, and we are working to ensure just that.

John McNeil and Scott McDonough were arraigned on Monday.

They have been charged with drug possession and drug trafficking.
