SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Authorities in Springfield say a middle school resource officer has been removed pending an investigation into what a city lawyer described as a “physical altercation” with a student.

Acting Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood said Tuesday the incident that occurred April 22 was first reported by the child’s doctor, who noticed a bruise during an exam.

Mayor Domenic Sarno acknowledged there is video of the interaction.

Officials on Monday announced that a police internal affairs investigation has been launched into the officer who worked at Kiley Middle School. The city has also requested a review hearing before the civilian Community Police Hearing Board.

The officer’s name wasn’t released.

The state Department of Children and Families will conduct its own investigation.
