BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) — A Cape Cod man charged with murder in the death of a woman in his apartment is incompetent to stand trial, a judge has ruled.

Marc Audette, 45, is charged in the death of Sandra Corfield, 53, of Edgartown in March, the Cape Cod Times reported.

A judge in Barnstable Superior Court found Audette incompetent Thursday to stand trial and ordered him committed to Bridgewater State Hospital for as long as six months.

The ruling of incompetence determines whether Audette understands the proceedings and can assist in his own defense, the newspaper reported.

Audette told police that he hit Corfield in the head with a dumbbell and then injured himself with a sword at an apartment in Mashpee, a town on Cape Cod, the newspaper reported. He also told police that he was not taking his medication and heard voices at the time that he struck Corfield.
