HAVERHILL, MASS. (WHDH) - An Essex Superior Court judge told the Haverhill teachers’ union that they cannot continue striking, and must return to class after two days of a district-wide strike and class cancelation.

The judge said he will issue a preliminary injunction Tuesday. If teachers strike again, they could be charged with contempt or face large fines. It is illegal for teachers to strike in Massachusetts.

The teachers have been striking since Monday, as they negotiate with the Haverhill School Committee for, among other things, higher wages, class size, prep time, safe work environments, and diverse hiring.
