A group of kayakers off of the coast of San Diego had a close encounter with a hammerhead shark and captured it on video.

The shark sighting prompted lifeguards to close down nearby beaches for the next 24 hours. They noted the shark was exhibiting what they called aggressive behavior.

According to lifeguards, the hammerhead followed the kayakers back to shore and it was last seen just outside the surf line near La Jolla.

Experts said hammerheads rarely present a threat to humans.

Since scientists began keeping records in the 1950s, there have been just 32 documented hammerhead shark attacks.
