Southern-based doughnut chain Krispy Kreme Doughnuts announced in a release that it will open four shops in New Hampshire and three in Maine over the next several years.

Krispy Kreme expanded to the Boston-area back in 2003 with several locations opening, but all of those stores eventually closed.

Now the chain is giving it another go in the New England market largely dominated by Dunkin Donuts.

“The demand for Krispy Kreme doughnuts and coffee continues to grow throughout New England, so we are very happy to bring this iconic brand to New Hampshire and Maine,” said Patricia Perry, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts’ Vice President, Global Franchise Development.

The company did not provide specifics about where and when the new stores in New England will open. The closest Krispy Kreme shop to Boston currently is at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Krispy Kreme is based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and has 1,000 shops in 25 countries according to the company.
