A family had a close call with a large alligator they spotted surfing through the water at a Texas beach.

The family said they were about 40 yards from the alligator, which was more than 8 feet long. They immediately got out of the water and alerted other families before calling police.

Experts said it is not uncommon for larger alligators along the coast to go into the surf. Beachgoers are advised by game wardens to leave alligators alone and do not attempt to feed them.
