BOSTON (WHDH) -

A large fire tore through two homes in East Boston.

Fire crews have been on the scene for hours trying to fight the inferno.

The fire broke out right next to the famous Santarpio’s Pizzeria.

A 90-year-old man said the flames started in his first floor apartment kitchen when he plugged in his air conditioner.

He escaped but went back in to rescues his beloved dog, Luna.

Everyone else in the Chelsea Street duplex got out safely.

The fire ripped through six apartments and caused the back porches to collapse.

Flames spread to five neighboring buildings, melting siding. One of the neighboring buildings was legendary Santarpio’s restaurant, which was packed with dinner customers.

The fire broke out during one the hottest Boston summer nights, which made conditions difficult for firefighters who called for backup.

Sources tell 7News, nine adults and three children have been displaced by the fire. The Red Cross is assisting them. Sources also tell 7News, one firefighter needed medical attention.
