AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — A lawmaker who wants to use a never-before-tried constitutional provision to remove Maine Gov. Paul LePage from office isn’t taking “no” for an answer.

Independent Rep. Jeffrey Evangelos is asking Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap to reconsider his decision against starting the process of temporarily removing LePage from office for being unfit to serve.

Dunlap called the Republican governor’s conduct “reprehensible” Thursday, but said he lacked “manifest evidence” that LePage is unable to serve.

On Friday, Evangelos accused Dunlap, a Democrat, of being in cahoots with Democratic lawmakers and repeated an Edmund Burke quote that says the only thing needed for evil to triumph is “for good men to do nothing.”

Evangelos wants Dunlap to refer the matter to the state supreme court. Dunlap had no further comment Friday.
