LAWRENCE, MASS. (WHDH) - Lawrence police are investigating a shooting on Wednesday that left a 52-year-old city worker dead, officials said.
Officers responding to a report of shots fired in the area of Andover and Clifton streets about 2 p.m. found a man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to police. He was taken by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim, whose name was not released, was a City of Lawrence DPW worker who was performing road repair at the time of the shooting.
“I noticed the DPW worker laying on the ground and a car took off up the street,” witness Robert Ansaldi said.
Another witness said he does not understand why someone would do this.
“I don’t know what the motivation was for killing him. I mean, he was just doing his job filling in the potholes and he gets gunned down?”
A candle has been left at the scene to remember the victim.
According to family members, the victim leaves behind two grown children.
