SOUTH BOSTON (WHDH) — Handwritten letters allegedly written by mobster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger to his old friend in Boston were recovered and sold.
“It says ‘hang in there and give yourself a good chance to make it’” said Phil Castinette of Sportsworld, a memorabilia shop in Saugus.
They were believed to have been written from Bulger’s jail cell G-108 in the Spring of 2012.
“A wise man learns from the mistakes of others,” read Castinette.
Last week the recipient, who wants to remain anonymous, sold the letters to Castinette. He said the two letters are the real thing.
“It’s got all the jail letter head and where it came from, cell number, prison number, whatever it is. But I mean that doesn’t get any more authentic than that,” said Castinette.
In the letters Bulger complained about life behind bars. He wrote, “I’m locked up 23 hours a day five days per week and 24 hours two days per week.”
“Look back with nostalgia on my year at Alcatraz: the health salt air, the yards with weights to work out in and lots of good convicts. None of that here,” read Castinette.
The 83-year-old also claimed he offered to plead guilty to the charges he faces to ensure his girlfriend, Catherine Greig, would avoid prison.
“The answer is no. They want their big circus trial,” read Castinette.
