Two dozen local firefighters returned home safe Friday from the front lines of the massive wildfire in California.

The rim fire in California is now known to have been started by an illegal campfire that grew out of control.

It got so big that crews from our area went to help contain it.

“I felt very honored and privileged to be on this team,” said Jon Lacasse, a DCR Firefighter.

“You’re working 12 hr days, 14 hour days, and it gets tough. You’re sleeping out in tents, but at the end of the day, hard day’s work really just feels good inside,” said Sam Schilling, a DCR firefighter.

Everyone who returned home said – they’ll either go back out west to fight fires later this year – or next year if needed.
